Five Poetry Contests Worth Your Time And Attention

Five poetry and story contests now open at Winning Writers will award over $24,000 in cash. The contests include the Tom Howard/John H. Reid Short Story Contest, the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest (no fee), the War Poetry Contest, the Margaret Reid Poetry Contest for Traditional Verse, and the Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest. These contests aim to be models in the publishing industry for their excellence, transparency and ease of entry. Winning Writers was named one of the “101 Best Websites for Writers” by Writer’s Digest in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Guidelines for all contests are available at www.winningwriters.com

I’ve got to say the Winning Writers contests are some of the best contests in poetry. This is not like that famous scam where you are accepted for writing the worst poem in history and have to buy the book to see your name in print. These contests actually have some merit.

I enter the war poetry contest almost every year. I lose, but I enter. It’s the only war poetry contest I know of. They tend to like longer poems, but many of them are quite good. And the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest is a hoot. I promise myself I’ll enter every year, but I never do. The deal is, you must enter a poem that you also enter into one of the scam poetry contests and I believe you’ve got to have your acceptance letter to prove it. I may be wrong about that last point, but the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest looks like a lot of fun.

Each of these contests holds water and I strongly encourage working poets take the time to submit entries. I’m not a big contest enterer myself (I know, enterer is an awkward word, but what the hell!), but these are contests I’d definitely pay attention to.
